Suspended among clouds of pink candyfloss, Jordi Roca appears inside the playful universe that has always surrounded his work. His T-shirt reads La vida en dulce (life on the sweet side) yet the words accompanying the image move towards something more intimate: the imagined sensation of being in complete harmony with the world, free from pain, surrounded by weightlessness, tenderness and gentle scents. Then comes his confession: he has never felt it either, although he would like to.
The thought does not remain in the clouds for long. Jordi Roca returns to what can still be done with the life we have. He suggests that humanity may depend, at least in part, on the attitude each person chooses to bring to it. In his view, an ordinary gesture made with care can sometimes accomplish more than those who write laws, inherit crowns or possess immense fortunes.
His answer is simple: “Let us do well what we know how to do.” For a pastry chef, this means continuing to create pleasure, wonder and moments of lightness without pretending that sweetness can erase everything else. Borrowing the final sentiment from the poet Joan Maragall and his praise of life, Roca leaves one thought floating above the image: love for everyone.
