Dominique Crenn will open Petit Crenn in Melbourne in late October 2026, giving the chef behind San Francisco’s three-Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn her first Australian restaurant. Created with Salter Brothers, the 40-seat café and wine bar will be located inside the InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto at 495 Collins Street. The address revives the name of Dominique Crenn’s former San Francisco neighbourhood restaurant while allowing it to take on the rhythm of a new city.
Petit Crenn will move from coffee and pastries in the morning to small plates, wine and cocktails later in the day. The menu draws on French comptoirs and the cooking of Brittany, where Dominique Crenn grew up: mussels with preserved lemon, French ravioles with onion consommé, steak tartare with egg yolk jam and sauce au poivre, alongside seasonal tartines, salads and a changing plat du jour. At the rear of the restaurant, Le Contour will place five standing guests beside the kitchen, close to the movement of each service.
Crenn is already meeting Melbourne’s farmers, fishermen and artisans to understand the produce behind the menu. Her intention is to preserve the hospitality associated with Petit Crenn – a place where someone might stay for five minutes or five hours – while giving Australian ingredients their own place within its French vocabulary. There will be no reservations: guests will simply walk through the door. The name returns, but Melbourne will give it a new landscape.
