Hong Kong’s hospitality community gathers at Amber for Nepal

On September 12, Richard Ekkebus the three-Michelin-starred chef of the restaurant Amber at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong will host a 16-hands charity lunch in support of communities affected by the recent flash floods in Nepal. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Hong Kong Red Cross’s Nepal Flash Floods Emergency Appeal, funding immediate assistance and longer-term recovery.

The lunch brings together chefs and restaurateurs from across Hong Kong. Richard Ekkebus, Terry Ho and Stephan Tranchet of Amber will cook alongside Junior Nadje of Mandarin Grill + Bar, Matt Abergel of Always Joy, Marc Mantovani and Clement Mollar of Cristal Room by Anne-Sophie Pic, Manav Tuli of Leela, Ryo Matsui of Torikaze, Liu Zhen of Yong Fu Hong Kong and Gagan Gurung of Tell Camellia. Together, they will serve a 14-course menu combining French, Indian, Japanese and Chinese dishes. Gurung will also create a cocktail featuring Nepalese tea.

The gathering also recognises a community whose work has long supported Hong Kong’s restaurants from within. Ekkebus describes Nepalese hospitality professionals as a quiet backbone of the city’s industry, while his own connection to Nepal was formed through climbing in the Himalayas and the guidance of the Sherpa people. Priced at HK$4,488 per guest, including an aperitif and four-glass wine pairing, the lunch turns that relationship into a direct act of reciprocity: an industry serving those who have so often helped it serve others.
