Australia’s First Michelin Guide: South Australia Leads the Way with 77 Restaurants

For the first time in its history, the Michelin Guide has arrived in Australia. The inaugural Michelin Guide South Australia 2027, revealed on October 14 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, recognises 77 restaurants across Adelaide and the state’s wine regions: one Two-Star restaurant, ten with One Star, 16 Bib Gourmands and 50 Michelin Selected addresses. It is a significant first step for a country whose restaurant culture has long developed without the red guide, and Michelin has chosen to begin not with Sydney or Melbourne, but with South Australia – a region where vineyards, farms, native ingredients and an increasingly confident restaurant scene remain unusually close to one another.

The first name written at the top of that history is Magill Estate Restaurant. Led by Scott Huggins and overlooking the Penfolds vineyards at the foot of the Adelaide Hills, the restaurant enters the Guide directly with Two Michelin Stars, the highest distinction awarded in this inaugural selection. Ten further restaurants receive One Star, and their geography is revealing. Adelaide is represented by arkhé, Aurora at ILA, Botanic and Esmay, but the list quickly leaves the city for the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. Six of the eleven starred restaurants are located on wine estates, making wine country not simply part of the backdrop to this first Australian Michelin selection, but one of its defining structures.

Michelin’s inspectors repeatedly found the same threads running through very different restaurants: produce, fire and a strong sense of place. Native ingredients such as quandong, lemon myrtle and Australian meats appear alongside European, Southeast Asian and Japanese influences without being treated as decorative references. Wood and charcoal recur throughout the selection, while wine remains deeply integrated into the experience. It gives this first edition a character that feels less concerned with importing a pre-existing model of fine dining than with identifying what has already been developing locally. As Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, described it, South Australia combines technical refinement with a relaxed and distinctly local generosity.
